Abstract

This paper examines how attribution in Tagalog is adapted and explained by missionaries during the Spanish colonial period by comparing it to the verb “ser.” The six missionary grammars of Tagalog analyzed in this study reveal two principal approaches in explaining the “sum, es, fui” concept of Roman languages, features of attribution in Latin equivalent to attributive anteposition and the “ay” inversion in Tagalog.
